Saaremaa: A bridge too far

But any chance of a chunnel?

The Estonian economy and communications ministry announced that a bridge between the largest Estonian island Saaremaa and the mainland will not be built in the next ten years. The ministry believes the lack of a bridge will not stop ferry traffic between the mainland and the island.

Bridges have long been hot topics in Estonia, especially around election time. Futurists have even dared speculate that someday there might be a bridge connecting Tallinn and Helsinki, and even one government for the two cities. We have to admit, the latter doesn’t excite us very much. Among other things, it would ruin Finland’s high ranking by Transparency International. When Estonia’s government ranks as high as Finland’s, only then should it spread its “know-how” to other countries.
