A Lithuanian held on suspicion of theft in an Arctic Norway jail slipped out of custody by stripping naked, smearing himself with vegetable oil and sliding through the prison bars on Christmas eve. Another Lithuanian, held as an accomplice in the same cell, tried to escape using the same technique, but only could get his head and part of his shoulders through the bars. “It was a good effort,” said a Norwegian official.
